Mary Ramsey lead singer, composer and string player for 10,000 Maniacs spoke to us in a recent phone interview about their new album, Twice Told Tales. This album is a beautiful and fearless exploration of traditional folk songs with arrangements that move playfully between strict traditional musical forms and modern folk-pop interpretations. The players are, as we expect, in top form and the recording of Ramsey’s acoustic violin , viola and voice are nothing short of divine. How rare that the Maniacs have managed to maintain such a long and prosperous career while staying true to a uniquely democratic artistic process that fosters creativity and exploration of diverse music forms. No small feat for a commercial band working in an industry that tends to suppress creativity in favor of common and predictable songwriting with calculable returns!
10,000 Maniacs has consistently delivered quality material to their fans since the early 1980’s and still remains active and vital despite major changes in the line up and in the industry. As we learned from our conversation with Mary, the band continues to look for fresh material and new ways to connect with their audience.
